My back yard has quite a few large trees, which means a significant portion of the year I deal with tons of shade. Over the years I’ve removed a few trees and trimmed back branches, but two beds are still nearly 100% shaded. Hostas are the go-to plant for some, but I enjoy working with color. When I stumbled upon the coleus I knew I’d found the plant for me.
I spent less than $3.00 for a variety pack of seed, purchased growing medium, and set up a tray beneath a grow light. Within a few weeks I knew I’d made the right choice. The variety of color on the leaves was breathtaking: green with pink, red, or white streaks; mostly pink with a green border, even solid red. Gorgeous full leaves bring a lovely patch of color to my backyard.
My favorite is certainly this gorgeous red – I cannot wait to see what color flower blooms! Hostas certainly have their place in my garden, but I’m glad I stumbled upon this worthy shade plant.
